How to apply for admission
Find out how to apply for admission, check the status of your application, and accept or decline an offer of place.
If you’ve checked the application closing date for the programme that you want to apply for and you meet its entry requirements, then you’re ready to apply for admission to the programme online.
It should take you 15 to 20 minutes.
To complete your online application successfully, you’ll need the following information.

Your Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number
If you’re applying for a student loan, provide us with your IRD number to allow Inland Revenue to process your student loan interest write-off. -
Your National Student Number (NSN)
If you are applying to the University directly from a New Zealand secondary school you will need to know your National Student Number. -
Your previous academic history
If you are new to the University you will need to tell us about your previous secondary and tertiary academic study. Please have your academic records nearby.
If you are a current student at the University, please make sure your academic history includes any qualifications you have completed or are in the process of completing. University of Auckland qualifications will not be displayed but are kept on record, so you don’t need to enter these.
Note: It is essential that all secondary school study you have attempted, completed or are completing is entered in your Application for Admission. Failure to do so can result in a delay in the processing of your application. Remember to include your NSN if you have studied NCEA, and your Candidate Code and Centre Code if you have studied CIE.

The programme(s) for which you intend to apply
You will need to know the programmes and plans for which you wish to apply. -
Postgraduate course selection
To apply for certain postgraduate programmes, you may need to tell us the courses you intend to study. For some programmes you may also need to have considered a research project and/or a supervisor for your study. We encourage you to talk to the relevant department about your course selection before completing an online application. See Faculty student centres. -
Compulsory information
There are certain questions that you are required to complete. You can move on and return to a page at any time but the application will not be complete until all the required questions have been answered. These are marked with a red asterisk.
Terminology
The University may use words and terminology that are unfamiliar to you, such as 'programme' and 'plan'. If you see words that are underlined with a dotted line, you can click them to see a definition.
Help
If you’re not sure how to answer a particular question, look for a question mark icon. If you click one of these, a box will appear giving you more information.

If you are new to The University of Auckland:
- Go to the Application for Admission.
- Click the Sign up for a new account link below the password box. The ‘Register for a new account’ page will appear.
- Enter your email address, name and a password.
- Click Register. You will be sent an email asking you to complete your registration.
- Open the email and click the Complete your registration button.
- Return to the Application for Admission and sign in using your email address and the password you provided.
- You’ll be asked to provide some personal information such as your contact details, date of birth, citizenship and ethnicity. If you indicate that you have a disability, you’ll be asked for more information about it so that University staff can better meet your needs.
- You’ll then be asked for information about your academic history and qualifications.
If you are a current student at The University of Auckland or already registered with the University:
- Go to the Application for Admission.
- Sign in using your NetID/UPI or email address, and your password.
- You might be asked to provide some personal details that the University does not yet have on record.
- Check your academic history to make sure it includes any qualifications you have completed or are in the process of completing. University of Auckland qualifications will not be displayed but are kept on record, so you don’t need to enter these.
After you have completed the personal details and academic history sections, follow the online instructions to apply for a programme (degree, diploma, or certificate).
Applying for more than one programme
- You can apply for more than one programme if you want to—up to a maximum of six per term (semester). That way, if you’re not offered a place in your first choice, you might be offered a place in another.
- Simply complete your application for the first programme, then click to apply for another one. Or you can come back later to apply for another programme.
After you submit an application
- You will receive an acknowledgement email from the University.
- That email will tell you if there is any documentation we require from you in order to complete the processing of your application.
- You will probably receive your email within a few minutes of submitting your application, but in some cases it may take us up to two working days to verify that your account is unique.
